You Are Renting the Redirect
What a dynamic QR code is, what it can track, and the catch that does not make it onto the flyer: at most vendors you are renting the redirect by the month.

A dynamic QR code lets you change the destination after printing and count every scan. Both of those are real, and a static code cannot do either.
The part that does not make it onto the flyer is that at most vendors, you are renting the redirect by the month.
The thing itself is simple enough. A dynamic code encodes a short redirect the generator controls, rather than your final web address. Someone scans, their phone hits that company's server, and the server looks up where to forward them. The printed pattern holds still while the address it resolves to can change underneath it.
Worth knowing before anyone sells you one: there is no dynamic QR code in the standard. QR Code is defined by ISO 18004, approved in the year two thousand, and that standard covers the symbol and how data is packed into the grid. Nothing more. Dynamic is a service layer that vendors bolt on top of an ordinary QR code.
A static code does the opposite. It bakes your destination into the pattern, so no server sits in the middle. That makes it permanent, and free, and frozen. The address it opens is fixed the second you generate it.
Four things separate them. Whether you can edit after printing. Whether you can track scans. Whether a server has to stay online. And whether the code can expire.
We should be fair to dynamic codes here, because they earn their keep. Printed the wrong link on five thousand flyers? A dynamic code re-points without a reprint. Running the same campaign across three cities? You get scan counts and locations that a static code has no way to produce.
What it can log is more than most people expect. Total scans and unique scans. The time. The location. The device and the operating system it runs. A static code logs none of that, because there is no server to do the logging.
So the trade is honest enough. A static code wins on permanence. A dynamic code wins on flexibility and on data. Both are reasonable answers to a real question.
The catch is who holds the redirect.
Most vendors rent it monthly. If the plan lapses, or the trial ends, the printed code can stop working. When we checked fifteen popular generators against their own documentation, eight of them could expire a free or trial user's code.
And then the money, which I am deliberately not going to put a number on. These plans move, and a recorded sentence cannot carry a date the way a page can. The shape of it is what matters: dynamic QR sits behind a monthly subscription at most vendors, so what you are buying is not the code but the years. Three years on a mid-tier plan is a serious line item, and our pricing page lays that comparison out with the date it was checked on it.
Here is the version I would want said to me before a print run. The question is not which generator has the nicest dashboard. It is whether you are buying a code or renting one, and what you have agreed happens to five thousand printed copies on the day you stop paying.
